Wine Description for Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2023 by Sottimano

Character
The Basarin is one of the great single-vineyard Barbarescos from Sottimano – a wine that embodies the typical tension between structural rigour and inner warmth that makes Barbaresco so unmistakable. Not a wine for the impatient, but one that demands time and rewards it generously.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Basarin lies in the heart of Neive, one of the three core communes of the Barbaresco region in Piedmont. The characteristic Tortonian soils of pale tuff limestone and marl lend the wine a fine mineral definition and aromatic precision. Neive is considered the coolest and slowest of the three Barbaresco communes – a circumstance that grants Nebbiolo here particular elegance and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s most demanding and rewarding grape varieties – thin-skinned, high in tannins, high in acidity and of extraordinary aromatic complexity. Sottimano, led by Rino Sottimano and his children, cultivates a craftsman-like, terroir-focused style. The ageing process is tradition-conscious, without overwhelming the fruit – the goal is always transparency of terroir. The vintage 2023 was characterised by warmth in Piedmont, promising ripe tannins and fullness without sacrificing the variety’s typical acidity structure.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this depth calls for dishes with substance and character: Tajarin al ragù di carne, Brasato al Barolo or slowly braised beef cheeks are classic companions. Equally recommended: game dishes such as venison haunch or hare ragout, as well as mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno – dishes that tame the tannins of Nebbiolo and bring its depth to the fore.
