Wine Description for Riesling Nackenheim Rothenberg GG „wurzelecht“ 2022 by Kühling-Gillot

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow in the glass, clear and luminous – a visual foretaste of the concentrated power of this extraordinary Riesling.
Nose
Dramatic and almost austere, this Rothenberg presents itself with: smoke, salted lemon and crushed flint dominating the first impression. A subtle reduction lends the wine additional complexity. Interspersed with these are petrichor, herbs, mustard seed and pink peppercorn – bright light reflections in a dark, spicy, extract-rich aromatic profile that promises depth and tension.
Palate
A small masterpiece of precision. The wine virtually explodes on the tongue: dark stone, black berries, lemon zest, graphite, salt and yeast merge into a compact, forceful taste experience. Despite all its elegance, the Rothenberg builds enormous grip – taut, aloof, almost unapproachable in its youthful firmness. The mineral structure is overwhelming; the wine definitely needs time to unfold its full potential.
Finish
Long, stony and of impressive persistence. The saline minerality lingers, accompanied by a subtle herbal spice and citrus freshness.
Terroir & Origin
The own-rooted vineyard parcel in the Rothenberg was planted in 1934 and lies in the northernmost, steepest corner of the legendary Roter Hang, directly adjacent to the Pettenthal. A small wall surrounds this historic prime site – a testament to Rheinhessen’s winemaking history and extraordinary terroir expression.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This powerful, mineral-driven Riesling demands equally characterful dishes: turbot with lemon butter, pan-fried scallops, oysters, pike-perch in mustard crust or aged Comté. Also an impressive pairing with calf’s sweetbread with morels.
Special Features
Own-rooted vines from 1934 – an absolute rarity. This is undoubtedly one of the great Rieslings of the 2022 vintage, impressively demonstrating what Rheinhessen is capable of in top vineyard sites. Definitely decant and enjoy with patience, or better yet, lay down for a few years in the cellar.
