Wine Description for Riesling Nackenheim Rothenberg GG „wurzelecht“ 2021 by Kühling-Gillot

Character
The Rothenberg GG from Kühling-Gillot is a tribute to the own-rooted Riesling tradition – vines that were never grafted onto American rootstocks and thus maintain a direct connection to the soil. This rare distinction lends the wine an extraordinary depth and mineralic precision. With moderate 12.5% alcohol and a dry style, this GG embodies the elegant restraint that Rheinhessen displays at its finest – far removed from sweet clichés, close to the essence of great German Riesling culture.
Terroir & Origin
The Rothenberg in Nackenheim ranks among the historically most significant vineyard sites on the Rhine. The red Rotliegend soils from weathered porphyry and sandstone fundamentally shape the character of this terroir. This geological formation from the Permian period lends the wines their characteristic spicy minerality and structure. Kühling-Gillot, under the leadership of Caroline and Philipp Gillot, is among the pioneers of the Rheinhessen quality revolution and manages the vineyard site with uncompromising biodynamic philosophy.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling in its purest form: the own-rooted vines – a rarity following the phylloxera catastrophe – root deep in the mineral-rich Rotliegend and yield grapes of particular concentration. Vinification at Kühling-Gillot follows the principle of minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation, extended time on lees, ageing in traditional large wooden casks. The result is a wine that combines precision with substance, without masking the vibrant acidity that defines great Riesling.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The mineralic tension and dry structure make this Riesling the ideal companion for freshwater fish such as pike-perch or char, pan-seared scallops or asparagus with hollandaise sauce. The acidity harmonises brilliantly with goat’s cheese or aged Comté. Asian cuisine with moderate spice – such as Thai curries or Vietnamese summer rolls – also finds in this GG a refined partner.
