In the glass

  1. Colour

Deep, dense cherry red with garnet reflections at the rim.

  2. Nose

Ripe dark berries such as blackberry and black cherry, accompanied by fine roasted notes, vanilla, spices and a hint of balsamic and Mediterranean herbs.

  3. Palate

Dry, full-bodied and concentrated at 14.5% vol.; succulent dark fruit, silky yet grippy tannins, fresh acidity and a long, spicy finish with a mineral echo.

  4. Character

An elegant, powerful Rioja with depth and structure – the Graciano grape brings freshness and spice, while the old Tempranillo vines contribute density and complexity.

  5. Pairing

Herb-crusted rack of lamb, braised beef cheeks or aged Manchego.

  6. Notes

Grapes are sourced from the estate’s roughly 70 vineyard sites across nine villages at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, with vines averaging 60 years of age. On the sorting table, the bunches are cut in half; only the sunnier shoulders go into the Reserva, while the tips are destined for the Erre Punto.

Tasting note

Character
A Rioja of quiet sovereignty: dark cherry, plum and a hint of spice and cedar, accompanied by fine-grained tannins and remarkable density without ever feeling heavy. The 14.5% ABV is carried almost weightlessly. A wine that places craftsmanship above effect.
Terroir & Origin
The Tempranillo and Graciano vines are rooted in the calcareous soils of Rioja Alavesa, which lend the wines a cool, mineral vein. Remírez de Ganuza cultivates around 80 hectares of its own vineyards across 70 vineyard sites and nine municipalities; the vines for the Reserva and Gran Reserva are 60 years old on average. Founder Fernando Remírez de Ganuza, a vineyard broker for twenty years, knew every good site in the region personally; this knowledge lives on in every bottle. Since 2019, José Ramón Urtasun has continued to run the estate alongside cellar master Jesús Mendoza, whom Tim Atkin named Winemaker of the Year in his Rioja Report 2024.
Grape Varieties & Vinification
Tempranillo provides fruit and structure, Graciano freshness, spice and acidity – a classic Rioja alliance that has become rare today. The selection process is particularly special: as early as 1989, the estate built Spain’s first mechanical sorting table and has since separated the sun-ripened shoulder berries destined for the Reserva and Gran Reserva from the tips of the bunches, which go into the entry-level wine. Meticulousness as a method, not a pose.
Food Pairings
The structure calls for substance: rack of lamb, braised ox cheek, duck confit or a plate of Jamón Ibérico with Manchego. This Rioja also shows its best side alongside mushroom dishes and spicy stews from Basque cuisine – a wine that truly comes into its own at the table.
