Wine Description for Gamlitz Morillon DAC 2024 from Sattlerhof

Colour & Appearance
Pale straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a classic appearance for a young South Styrian Chardonnay from cool high-altitude vineyards.
Nose
Precise and multi-layered: red apple skins and juicy flesh dominate, underpinned by orange zest, roasted almonds and hazelnuts. These are joined by mineral notes of crushed quartz stone and a fine herbal spice – typical of the crystalline soils of Gamlitz.
Palate
Here the village wine reveals itself as grounded and characterful: hearty and lively with invigorating acidity (5.5 g/l), which gives the wine tension and drinkability. A fine grip and subtle salinity structure the mid-palate, whilst stone fruit, citrus and yellow plums provide juicy fruit. Noticeably darker and more herb-driven than its Pinot Blanc counterpart – a Chardonnay with terroir connection.
Finish
Medium to long, with sustained freshness and a mineral echo reminiscent of the mica sands of the steep slopes. The herbal spice fades subtly.
Terroir & Origin
From own vineyards in and around Gamlitz, South Styria. The 15 to 35-year-old vines are rooted in steep slopes between 350 and 450 metres altitude on crystalline quartz sands with mica. The cool microclimate preserves freshness and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Chardonnay (regionally called Morillon), selectively hand-harvested. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in large wooden casks lend the wine structure without obtrusive oak notes. With 1.1 g/l residual sugar practically dry, at moderate 13% alcohol.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with pan-fried char, scallops, Wiener Schnitzel, veal sirloin or creamy risottos. Also an excellent choice with aged alpine cheese and pumpkin dishes.
Special Features
An authentic South Styrian village wine that prioritises terroir over technique. The spontaneous fermentation and maturation in large wooden casks underscore Sattlerhof’s philosophy: precise, honest wines with clear provenance.
