Wine Description for Morillon Muschelkalk 2024 by Tement

Character
Tement is among the pioneers of South Styrian wine culture and has sustainably shaped the term Morillon – the traditional Styrian designation for Chardonnay. The Muschelkalk 2024 represents the house’s classic line: precise, mineral-driven and of crystalline clarity. The name refers to the geological character imparted by muschelkalk soils, which lend this wine its characteristic tension and salinity. With very low residual sugar, this Morillon presents itself as uncompromisingly dry and of cool elegance.
Terroir & Origin
South Styria, with its steep hillside vineyards and pannonian-alpine climate influence, offers ideal conditions for Chardonnay. The muschelkalk soils – relics of a primordial sea – impart the wines with pronounced minerality and freshness. Tement cultivates some of the region’s finest vineyard sites, where cool nights and warm days ensure slow ripening and complex aromatic development. The 2024 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season that favoured both freshness and ripeness equally.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay, affectionately called Morillon in Styria, finds one of its most authentic expressions here. Tement cultivates a style that places finesse before opulence – cool fermented, often aged in large wooden casks or stainless steel to avoid masking the varietal fruit and terroir-driven minerality. The house philosophy aims for drinkability and precision rather than power, for elegance rather than extraction. The result is wines of remarkable ageing potential and gastronomic versatility.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A classic companion to Austrian cuisine: excellent with char, pike-perch or trout from local waters. The minerality harmonises perfectly with seafood, scallops and oysters. Also an excellent choice with asparagus, young goat’s cheese or roasted veal with light sauces. Its freshness makes it an ideal aperitif.
