Wine information
The sedimentary limestone interroirs, mainly located on the foot hills of the Vosges in Alsace, have always been the place par excellence for the production of robust and well-structured Gewürztraminer wines. Depending on the amount of clay present, this brings a fresher element to the soil, slowing down the ripening process and thus preserving the acidity. The lime content contributes to the wine's aromatic profile and texture, making it spicier, less floral, with a well-defined tannic structure that is essential to the wine's balance. Especially for Gewürztraminer, full skin ripeness is essential. Otherwise, it can lead to an overly aromatic, incomprehensive and bitter wine taste. Both a high-quality terroir and a late harvest play an important role here.
Expansion information
As the natural acidity is low, a later harvest does not have the same impact on this wine as on other grape varieties that might suffer more from acid degradation. All the grapes used for this wine come from our preferred single vineyard sites or Grands Crus, where younger vines are selected amidst the beautiful old vines.
Color
An intense and radiant golden yellow.
Aroma
An explosion of exoticism flows from the 2019 Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire. Fruity notes of oranges, citrus fruits and honeydew melons as well as vanilla scents dominate at first. The addition of oxygen brings out additional aromas of peach, lychee, quince jelly and pear, accompanied by notes of rose. Everything is perfectly embedded in the chalky base and reveals the exceptional character of this wine already at a young age.
Taste
A subtle sweetness immediately conquers the palate, but goes hand in hand with an amazing freshness and fine tannic acid structure. An excellent Gewurztraminer that delights with its elegance and tempts you to keep drinking. Thanks to its fine structure, it also cuts a fine figure with food! We recommend decanting the wine and enjoying it from large glasses.
Alternative food recommendations
As an aperitif with peppered caramel biscuits. For the main course, you could serve a tartlet of sun-dried tomatoes with cardamom and crispy green beans or a turbot fillet with a sesame crust, saffron white wine butter and a garnish of chervil flowers.
