Wine information
The Clos-Saint-Urbain is home to a rarely seen star in the smallest of settings - the Gewurztraminer. On a manageable section of just 0.5 hectares you will find this character wine, each year a limited edition of only about 1500 bottles. It is not quantity that characterises this wine, the essence of its uniqueness lies in the wild liaison between the aromatic force of the Gewurztraminer and the structure-giving power of the Rangen. The result is a dry wine style that is unparalleled.
Maturing process
In the championship of fermentation of Clos-Saint-Urbain, Gewurztraminer always holds pole position. The south-facing, steep slopes of the Rangen are enthroned at the end of a cool valley, at a remarkable altitude for Alsatian jumps. Not really the pampered habitat of the Gewurztraminer, but the Thur River, which flows picturesquely at the foot of the slopes, brings a climatic bonus that allows the cultivation of this grape variety. The 2019 vintage comes from a late harvest and fermented quickly to an almost dry perfection.
Visual impression
A luminous dense golden yellow unfolds before your eyes.
Sensory impression
A literal storm of the senses awaits you in the bouquet of the Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann 2019. A true orgy of freshness awaits you, consisting of orange flesh, peach, pear and grapefruit, paired with a sea of flowers and a fine pepper note. These are joined by striking matchstick tones, exquisite light tobacco and a citrusy freshness reminiscent of crisp ginger. A vital spell of freshness that represents the magic of the 2019 vintage.
Taste experience
The first sip keeps the promise of the nose - a fine elegance, carried by tangy acidity and an impressive minerality. Juicy citrus notes meet a fine tannin structure and reveal an impressive vitality. Prominent alcohol remains discreetly in the background and lets the silky grace that is in every droplet take the lead. It is best to enjoy this liquid delight immediately after purchase - and break into a feast for your senses. If you already have the wine in the house, consider decanting it a day or two beforehand and serve it in large Burgundy glasses.
Food recommendations
Explore new culinary worlds with combinations like pistachio baguette with caramelised apple, cardamom, chilli and cumin. Or indulge in Moroccan lemon chicken in harissa broth, accompanied by a portion of date couscous and aubergine baba ganoush garnished with deep-fried flower cress. An Alsatian pigeon dish glazed with spruce honey and black pepper, accompanied by confit chicken legs and kohlrabi in a lemon ginger sauce could also be a delicious option.
