Wine Description for Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2020 3000ml Double Magnum by Château de Pibarnon
- Colour & Appearance
- Intense purple-red with luminous violet reflections – a visual promise of power and youthfulness in equal measure.
- Nose
- Ethereal and seductive: lavender, roses and mint meld with juniper into a Provençal aromatic mosaic. Beneath this layer ripe cherries, plums and blackberries, accented by elderberries. Nuances of blood oranges and subtle vanilla round out the bouquet – a modern interpretation, yet with clear provenance identity.
- Palate
- Remarkably approachable for a young Bandol: With adequate aeration, a charming character unfolds of ripe black cherry, crisp plum and fine liquorice. Cinnamon and vanilla dance with a whisper of tonka bean, violet and pepper. The pronounced acidity structure and present yet integrated tannin give the wine backbone, whilst a cool, fresh vein provides elegance. Impressive length.
- Finish
- Persistent and cool, with lingering fruit and spice notes that underscore the noble structure of this Vin de Garde.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines are rooted in a unique amphitheatre opening towards the Mediterranean on clay, limestone and Triassic chalk. Only the finest, oldest vines at 250 metres elevation are selected for this wine – at modest yields of 30 hl/ha.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A cuvée of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. Three-week fermentation, followed by 20 months ageing in carefully selected barriques, tonneaux and foudres of varying provenance – precisely calibrated by parcel.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Rib eye medium rare with rosemary butter, lamb rack from the grill with thyme and rosemary or wild mushroom ragout with usukuchi shoyu – this Bandol pairs well with bold flavours and roasted notes as readily as with earthy mushroom dishes.
- Special Features
- Bottled in the impressive double magnum (3 litres) – ideal for special occasions and long-term cellaring. A modern, already approachable Bandol with considerable ageing potential.
