Wine Description for Riesling Pettenthal GG 2024 by Kühling-Gillot

Character
The Pettenthal GG from Kühling-Gillot represents great Riesling craftsmanship from one of Rheinhessen’s most renowned vineyard sites. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol and dry style, this wine embodies the precise, mineral-driven character for which the estate is renowned. The GG classification (Großes Gewächs) stands for the highest quality standards and strict provenance – a terroir wine in the truest sense.
Terroir & Origin
The Pettenthal in Bodenheim ranks among Rheinhessen’s historically most significant vineyards. This south-east-facing steep slope is characterised by red Rotliegendes, an iron oxide-rich weathered rock from the Permian period, which imparts the wine its distinctive minerality and depth. This geological particularity, combined with the temperate climate of the Rheinhessen hills, creates ideal conditions for Rieslings of great elegance and ageing potential. Kühling-Gillot manages this privileged site with uncompromising quality standards and a sustainable approach.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling displays its full versatility in the Pettenthal: precision, freshness and ageing potential. The Kühling-Gillot estate favours spontaneous fermentation and restrained maturation, mostly in traditional large wooden casks, to express the provenance authentically. The moderate alcohol content points to physiological ripeness combined with freshness – a balancing act requiring finesse in the vineyard. The dry style underscores the mineral texture and makes the wine a classic food companion.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The combination of minerality, freshness and dry profile makes this Riesling an ideal companion for seafood, scallops or sushi. It also harmonises beautifully with pan-fried fish, poultry in light sauce or asparagus. The structure also carries richer dishes such as calf’s sweetbreads or risotto with porcini mushrooms.
