Info about the wine
The Schwarze Herrgott lies at the beginning of the Zellertal basin, which opens up a few kilometres further east and ends with the Frauenberg. Here, as there, the pure limestone bedrock predominates. The main difference is the microclimatic conditions. While the Frauenberg is characterised by its open, exposed location and the wind draught, the Schwarze Herrgott is located on a steep, narrow fault edge, which once again protects the location from rain and the full force of the light. The place was first mentioned in the records of St Philip of Zell. This Irish monk Christianised the region around 700 AD and founded a monastery near Zell . St Philip planted his mass vineyard in this location, which was a quarter of an hour's walk from his monastery. So that the monks did not have to walk back to pray every time, they also erected a cross there, which weathered black over time and gave the location its name. Thanks to written records, the Schwarzer Herrgott is one of the oldest wine-growing locations mentioned in documents today. The border between Rheinhessen and the northern Palatinate runs right through the centre of Schwarzer Herrgott.
Color
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
What a revelation on the nose, after a few hours of decanting, the 2022 Mölsheim Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling GG trocken reveals itself with expressive minerality, compact and cool in appearance and aromas of citrus, grapefruit, green apple, verbena, mint, mussel shells and a hint of roasted soy sauce and crustacean shell. As youthful and closed as it appears, its entrée is full of promise.
Palate
Once on the palate, it grabs hold of the tongue with a flavour reminiscent of lemon tossed in salt. Its coolness, elegance and vibrant freshness define its character. As clear as a mountain spring, every sip leaves you wanting more, the fruity citrus flavours and fresh herbs are omnipresent and end in a long finish with plenty of umami. Great ageing potential!
If possible, aerate for several hours and taste from large glasses!
