Wine Description for Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2022 1500ml Magnum by Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden yellow in the magnum, luminous and brilliant.
Nose
After generous aeration, an impressive aromatic profile unfolds of citrus, grapefruit and green apple, accompanied by verbena and mint. Beneath lies a fascinating mineral layer with notes of oyster shells, a hint of soy sauce and roasted crustacean shell. Cool, compact and promisingly reserved – a Riesling that demands patience and rewards it.
Palate
Gripping and precise. The wine glides across the tongue with a saline citrus freshness, reminiscent of lemon tossed in sea salt. Crystal clear like spring water, with vibrant acidity and elegant coolness. The fruity citrus aromas merge with fresh herbs, whilst a pronounced umami component lends the wine an additional dimension. Every sip demands the next.
Finish
Long, mineral and of impressive persistence. The umami notes linger, underscored by saline freshness and cool elegance.
Terroir & Origin
The Schwarze Herrgott lies at the beginning of the Zellertal basin on pure limestone rock. In contrast to the wind-exposed Frauenberg, this vineyard site benefits from a sheltered position on a steep fault line, which protects it from rain and intense sunshine. Historically significant: the Irish monk Philipp of Zell planted his sacramental vineyard here around 700 AD – one of the oldest documented wine-growing sites in Germany.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Mackerel with cucumber, mustard seeds and basil, prawns in almond crust with salted lemon sauce, ramen noodles with Thai curry sauce, oysters, sushi, pan-fried turbot or mature Comté.
Special Features
Grand Cru in the impressive magnum bottle (1500ml), which lends the wine additional ageing potential. Definitely decant for several hours and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses. A Riesling for the patient with enormous development potential over the next 10-15 years.
