Wine Description for Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2022 1500ml Magnum by Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
Radiant, intense golden yellow in the magnum bottle – a visual promise of concentration and substance.
Nose
After generous aeration, a mineral-cool complexity unfolds that captivates: citrus and grapefruit meet green apple, underpinned by verbena and mint. Unusual and fascinating nuances of oyster shells, a hint of soy sauce and roasted crustacean shell join in – an aromatics that rewards patience and promises ageing potential.
Palate
Gripping, almost aggressive in its youth: the Riesling glides across the tongue with salty lemon sharpness, vibrant with energy. The chalk-marked minerality dominates, cool and elegant as spring water. Citrus freshness and green herbs run through every sip, carried by a structure that demands large glasses.
Finish
Long, umami-driven and of remarkable persistence. The salty minerality lingers, accompanied by citrus notes – a finale that is addictive and calls for the next glass.
Terroir & Origin
The Schwarze Herrgott at the Zellertal basin is among the oldest documented wine-growing sites in Germany – planted around 700 AD by Saint Philipp of Zell as a sacramental vineyard. The vineyard site on pure limestone rock on a steep fault line offers protection from rain and extreme light exposure. A microclimate that creates elegance and tension – in contrast to the wind-exposed openness of the Frauenberg.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling in its most uncompromising form: dry, 12.5% alcohol, precise and cool. The magnum bottle promises optimal ageing conditions for the years to come.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The salty minerality and umami structure call for mackerel with cucumber and mustard seeds, prawns in almond crust with salt lemon sauce or ramen with Thai curry. Generally: seafood, crustaceans, Asian aromatics.
Special Features
Definitely decant for several hours and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses. Enormous ageing potential – a GG for the patient, which will show its full greatness in 5-10 years.
