Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Lazzarito 2021 by Vietti

Colour & Appearance
Deep cherry to pomegranate red with the crystalline clarity characteristic of Nebbiolo, which already hints at the elegance and finesse of this wine.
Nose
The Lazzarito 2021 presents itself in its youth as still closed and aloof – typical of the powerful wines from Serralunga d’Alba. The fruit takes a back seat to mineral and earthy notes: rapini green, undergrowth, damp earth and iron-rich stone dominate. These are joined by hints of coal, violet flowers and a delicate touch of blue-toned fruit. A Barolo that demands patience.
Palate
On the palate, the true nature of this wine reveals itself: A driving, crystalline acidity forms the backbone and lends the wine impressive tension. The structure is firm and densely woven, with a ripeness that goes into depth rather than breadth. A gentle warmth runs through the fruit, whilst the firm tannin is precisely drawn. Saline and mineral notes characterise the wine, coupled with enormous energy and vitality.
Finish
The finish is of magnificent length, carried by the vibrant acidity and mineral components, which linger long and invite the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the Lazzarito vineyard site in Serralunga d’Alba, an amphitheatre-shaped vineyard with south-westerly exposure between 260 and 390 metres altitude. The calcareous and clay-rich soils impart the wine’s characteristic minerality and structure. The vines average 42 years of age at a density of 4,500 plants per hectare, guaranteeing concentration and complexity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, vinified with three to four days of cold maceration and 20-25% whole berries. The three-week maceration in stainless steel was conducted gently through cap submersion only. Following malolactic fermentation in used barriques, the wine aged 24 months in large wooden vessels – a classical vinification that prioritises elegance over opulence.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This structured Barolo calls for robust dishes: Brasato al Barolo, Ossobuco, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle risotto or braised wild game ragù.
Special Characteristics
A Barolo for traditionalists and those with patience – this wine will unfold its full splendour over the coming 15-20 years.
