Character
The Arbossar from Terroir al Limit embodies the purist philosophy of this pioneering Priorat project. As the house’s entry-level wine, it already displays the characteristic minerality and freshness that Dominik Huber and Eben Sadie coax from the old Carignan vines of Priorat. With a moderate 13.5% alcohol content, this 2023 presents itself as remarkably light-footed and approachable – a deliberate departure from the opulence for which Priorat long stood.
Terroir & Origin
Priorat, one of Catalonia’s most spectacular wine regions, is characterised by the famous Llicorella slate soils. These black, glittering slate plates store heat during the day and release it at night, whilst simultaneously providing excellent drainage. Terroir al Limit works in the higher-altitude, cooler vineyard sites of the region, where the vines benefit from Mediterranean influence and continental nights – ideal conditions for freshness and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Carignan (Catalan: Carinyena) is Priorat’s unsung hero, long underestimated in favour of Grenache. Terroir al Limit has rehabilitated this old, autochthonous grape variety and demonstrates its true potential: taut structure, vibrant acidity, red fruit aromatics and a pronounced mineral signature. Vinification is carried out with minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentation and restrained use of oak, in order not to mask the purity of the fruit and terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This approachable yet characterful Carignan harmonises beautifully with Catalan cuisine: grilled vegetables with romesco sauce, butifarra sausage, braised lentils with chorizo or pan-fried squid. Also an excellent choice with grilled lamb chops or a medium-aged Manchego.
