Wine Description for Arbossar 2023 by Terroir al Limit
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red with delicate violet reflections and brightening edges – for a Priorat Carignan of striking transparency and brightness. No doubt about it: this wine means business.
- Nose
- The nose is immediately Mediterranean and unmistakable: black olives, mulberry and morello cherry meet earthy depth and a characterful, slightly smoky-rubbery note that feels regionally typical and never intrusive. Spicy accents of allspice, juniper and cubeb pepper, plus liquorice and freshly grated dark chocolate. Rosemary, forest floor and a hint of blackcurrant bush wood round out the multi-layered, engaging picture. Remarkably precise for such a warm provenance.
- Palate
- Slender, juicy, light-footed – yet carried by genuine tension. A high-toned, gripping acidity pulls the wine linearly across the palate and lends it unusual drinking appeal for a Priorat. The texture is silky, the tannin barely perceptible. Vegetable notes of tomato, pepper and beetroot fit harmoniously into the fruit profile. With air, eucalyptus and mint emerge – freshness and precision pure and simple. Not a gram of heaviness, no concentration fatigue.
- Finish
- Long, spicy and invigorating. The acidity remains present, pleasant bitterness provides definition. The wine bids farewell with Mediterranean warmth – and a clear desire for a second sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Arbossar parcel lies immediately adjacent to the winery in Torroja del Priorat, at 350–400 metres elevation, fully north-facing. Slate and granite characterise the subsoil. The vines were planted in 1910 – stocks over 100 years old that weathered the dry 2023 vintage with impressive resilience and delivered a small but finely balanced harvest.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Carignan, hand-harvested and fermented as whole bunches. Eight months ageing in cement – no wood, no distraction. The result is a wine of crystalline purity and unfiltered varietal expression.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with grilled lamb with rosemary, tapas with black olives and Manchego, Pasta all’Arrabbiata or a rustic tomato and pepper tart. Also a revelation as an accompaniment to vegetarian dishes with aubergine and herbs.
- Special Features
- The Arbossar 2023 is a compelling argument that great Priorat need not mean power and mass. With this wine, Terroir al Limit demonstrates what hundred-year-old Carignan vines, cool north-facing exposure and consistent avoidance of wood can achieve: elegance, precision and drinking pleasure – from one of Spain’s most demanding appellations.
