Wine Description for Tros del Clos „Mas del Metge“ 2017 by Portal del Priorat
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, impenetrable purple with a luminous violet rim – clear and lustrous, the opaque core already reveals what follows: a wine of substance and seriousness.
- Nose
- Priorat in its purest form. A warm, powerful aromatics unfolds with the self-assurance of old vines: roasted plums, stewed elderberries and succulent blueberries dominate the first wave. Beneath these shimmer umeboshi apricot and heart cherry, accompanied by the dry spice of pipe tobacco, cinnamon stick, tarragon and black pepper. The finale is marked by an elegant note of dark chocolate – rum, grape, nut: classic and harmonious.
- Palate
- Powerful, yet not without warmth. The opening is forceful and full, the tannin grainy and substantial, possessing that rough texture which old Carignan vines on barren Llicorella soils produce. The acidity holds back with moderation and allows the wine room to unfold its character – steadfast, fervent, unmistakably Priorat.
- Finish
- Long and warm, with lingering notes of dark berries, spiced warmth and a hint of minerality that recalls the slate soils of its origin.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Priorat ranks among the world’s great red wine terroirs. The unique Llicorella soils – fractured slate with mica content – force the vines deep into the rock and bestow upon the wines that mineral density and concentration rarely found elsewhere.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure varietal from Carignan (Cariñena) – a grape variety often underestimated in its youth, yet finding majestic depth with age. Portal del Priorat understands how to coax the maximum local character from it, without restraining its natural power.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A wine for dishes of substance: Braised veal roulades with violet mustard sauce and carrots are a classic pairing. Equally convincing with Crispy pork knuckle with dark beer shallots and almond dumplings. For those preferring vegetarian fare: Baked potatoes with mojo rosso, Kalamata olives and Padrón peppers beautifully mirror the Iberian soul of this wine.
- Special Features
- The „Mas del Metge“ – the doctor’s house – carries a name steeped in history. The 2017 vintage brought intense ripeness with moderate freshness to Priorat: a wine that possesses ageing potential, yet already displays its full, characterful personality today.
