Wine Description for Pam de Nas 2016 by Trossos del Priorat
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, deep purple – dense and impenetrable at the core, with violet reflections at the rim. A wine that exudes authority through its colour alone.
- Nose
- Complex and multi-layered, yet never overwhelming. Blackcurrant, cassis and blackberry form the dark fruit foundation. Beneath these shimmer black olives, green walnuts and a hint of dark chocolate. Spicy notes of juniper and Mediterranean herbs, along with a delicate interplay of almond blossom and roasted almonds, lend the nose a fascinating depth. Leather and acacia wood round off the bouquet with elegant earthiness.
- Palate
- On the palate, Pam de Nas reveals what sets Priorat apart from other Spanish red wine regions: despite its 14.5% alcohol, it comes across as remarkably smooth and cool. The dark fruit is wrapped in silken tannins – present, but never coarse. A vibrant minerality – the unmistakable signature of the jagged Llicorella slate – runs through the wine like a golden thread, holding the richness in elegant balance. Not a gram of fat, not a gram of excess.
- Finish
- Long, precise and marked by pleasant freshness. The tannins are fine and firm, the aftertaste of dark fruit and minerality lingers convincingly. A finish that invites contemplation.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Trossos del Priorat estate lies in the heart of Gratallops, one of the most esteemed villages of DOQ Priorat. The barren Llicorella slate soils force the vines deep into the earth and bestow upon the wines that characteristic minerality and tension which makes Priorat unmistakable worldwide. Cool nights temper the heat of the day and preserve aromatic freshness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A blend of the classic Priorat varieties Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan), complemented by a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. For Pam de Nas, only the oldest vines and finest parcels of the estate are used. Ageing takes place in 100% new French barriques – an ambitious approach masterfully controlled by star oenologist Toni Coca, ensuring the oak supports the fruit without dominating it.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine of this stature demands dishes with character: chargrilled roast beef with green beans, papas arrugadas and chimichurri is a classic choice. Equally convincing is its harmony with lamb stew in the Oriental style with tabbouleh salad. For those feeling adventurous, try seared red prawns on black rice with olive tapenade – a Mediterranean combination that beautifully mirrors the wine’s mineral soul.
- Special Features
- Trossos del Priorat was founded in 2004 by the Vives family with the declared aim of combining the elegance of Burgundy with the power and terroir of Priorat. The vineyards are organically farmed. Pam de Nas is the centrepiece of this project – a wine that proves Priorat need not mean power and force, but can also express grace and precision.
