Tasting note
- Colour & appearance
- A slightly translucent garnet red that reveals even in the glass: there is nothing heavy or dense here. The wine appears cool and clear, like gazing into a mountain stream.
- Nose
- Red berries, but not the usual suspects. Redcurrants, barberries and raspberries meet violets, a hint of liquorice and pink pepper. Beneath lies something cool, almost stony – crushed limestone and herbs reminiscent of a windswept slope.
- Palate
- The name is no coincidence. This wine dances. An electrifying acidity meets mineral tension that makes one pause for a moment. Aromatically, it recalls a vintage Port – the ripe fruit, the spiced cake – yet without sweetness, without weight. Instead: savoury notes, firm tannins, a drive that pushes forward whilst remaining ethereal.
- Finish
- Stony and cool to the very last moment. No warm, soft conclusion, but a finale that leaves the tongue tingling and keeps the palate engaged for a long time.
- Terroir & origin
- Cornudella de Montsant, the northernmost village in the appellation, 700 metres above sea level. Here, 50- to 60-year-old vines grow on pale red clay with gypsum veins – a soil distinctly different from the famous slate of neighbouring Priorat. The altitude ensures cool nights and a slow ripening cycle. The result: freshness rather than fullness, tension rather than opulence.
- Grape variety & vinification
- A Pas de deux of Garnacha and Cariñena – along with some Garnacha Peluda. The grapes remain whole, are foot-trodden and fermented with indigenous yeasts, half in amphorae and half in stainless steel. Six months of ageing, then bottled. No wood, no cosmetics.
- Food recommendations
- The cool fruit and savoury structure call for dishes with depth but without heaviness: kecap manis-glazed haddock with black pudding wontons, beetroot salad with garam masala and paneer, or chicken with saffron and barberry rice and okra.
- Special features
- Tatjana Pećerić was a dancer before she became a winemaker – and you can taste it. This wine possesses the lightness of a choreography: precise, fluid, weightless. Whilst many Montsant wines focus on concentration, this one is all about transparency and drinkability. A wine that demonstrates the appellation is capable of far more than just power.
