Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Riserva „Villero“ 2016 by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium cherry red with remarkable transparency that underscores the maturity and finesse of this Barolo. At the rim, a delicate orange hue is already evident – an elegant sign of development and age.
- Nose
- A nose of striking complexity: ethereal notes meld with undergrowth and leaf, whilst red and dark berries as well as orange peel provide freshness. These are joined by smoke, bresaola, anise, iron and cherry stones – an aromatic profile that oscillates between earthy depth and refined sophistication.
- Palate
- Here the true greatness of this Villero reveals itself: weightlessly light yet deeply rooted. The concentrated fruit is carried by clear acidity and a polished, yet present tannin. Despite the 15% alcohol, the wine never feels heavy or excessive – instead it impresses through its mouth-filling texture and a balance that reconciles power with elegance. A wine of impressive density and depth.
- Finish
- Long, precise and with lingering fruit and spice notes that interweave with mineral accents. The tannin remains present without dominating – a promise of further development.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Villero vineyard in Castiglione Falletto ranks among the most prestigious sites in the Barolo region. The south-southwest exposure and the high clay content of the soils decisively shape the character of this wine. With 47-year-old vines and a yield of just 42 hl/ha, grapes of extraordinary concentration are produced.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, vinified using the traditional submerged-cap method over four months of maceration. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, with ageing over 30 months in large oak casks – a classical approach that promotes both structure and elegance.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine for great occasions: Brasato al Barolo, truffle risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, venison loin or Ossobuco alla Milanese. Also a perfect choice with game and hearty braised dishes.
- Special Characteristics
- A Riserva from an exceptional vintage that demonstrates how Vietti unites tradition and precision. A Barolo that already offers drinking pleasure now, yet can easily age for a further 15-20 years.
