Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Monvigliero 2020 1500ml Magnum by Vietti

Colour & Appearance
Bright, luminous cherry red with delicate colouration and a lighter rim – the typical, noble transparency of a great Nebbiolo, achieving depth not through extraction, but through finesse.
Nose
Monvigliero reveals itself from its most perfumed side: sour and sweet cherry, rosehip and beetroot unite to form an earthy-sweet fruit of captivating elegance. The spice palette ranges from juniper through cubeb pepper to pine bark and undergrowth. Added to this are damp forest floor, cedarwood, light tobacco leaves and a hint of coffee and dark chocolate. Lovage and rosemary provide aromatic freshness – an olfactory profile of cool, delicate complexity.
Palate
Here the true greatness of this cru reveals itself: fine-grained, cool, with an elegance that recalls Burgundian finesse rather than Piedmontese power. The fine-grained tannin is of silky precision, the gripping acidity stretches the wine into seemingly endless length. The fruit presents itself in the form of red fruit tea, earthy and subtle, never loud, yet of great expressiveness. The spice takes a back seat and works in the background – a contemporary interpretation of a cool, modern terroir wine of unfathomable length.
Terroir & Origin
The MGA vineyard site Monvigliero is historically regarded as the most important cru of Verduno in the northern Barolo appellation. At 240 metres elevation, south-southwest facing, Nebbiolo thrives on highly clayey calcareous marl. The 65-year-old vines produce grapes of extraordinary finesse.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September 2020. Traditional vinification with a high proportion of whole bunches (60%), cold maceration, 20-day fermentation in steel tank. Ageing over 24 months in large oak casks and barriques, malolactic fermentation in wood. Bottling without filtration in the magnum bottle.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Beetroot carpaccio with goat’s cheese cream, venison ham with mixed leaf salad, beef onglet with white bean cassoulet.
Special Features
The magnum bottle (1500ml) guarantees optimal ageing conditions for the next two decades. A Barolo of Burgundian elegance – Nebbiolo in its finest, coolest expression.
