Wine description for Trabener Gaispfad Riesling Kabinett trocken 2024 by Weiser-Künstler
- Colour & Appearance
- Clear, luminous straw yellow – youthful, fresh, of striking transparency.
- Nose
- Still closed and introverted, yet of great precision: slate as the dominant signature, as if someone had rubbed a fresh lemon over cold stone. Fine notes of lime and grapefruit zest, a hint of mint, something of green apple and a delicate trace of lanolin. A wine that has not yet fully revealed its hand.
- Palate
- On the palate too, the Trabener Gaispfad initially presents itself as closed and reserved – decanting here is not a luxury but a necessity. With air it unfolds into a dancing, multi-layered Riesling: bright citrus fruit, lively herbal spice and a mineral framework of pure slate. The acidity is taut, clear and uncompromising – it tolerates no residual sweetness, no yielding. A balancing act between feather-light elegance and tectonic firmness, which only the Mosel can achieve in this form.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral, with lingering slate spice and a lemony aftertaste. Not a gram of excess – pure essence.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Trabener Gaispfad in the Middle Mosel is characterised by Devonian blue slate – one of the most precise terroir translators in the wine world. The parcels are old, the vines are own-rooted: no grafting, no filter between soil and grape.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling from own-rooted old vines. Fermented via spontaneous fermentation, aged in the traditional Mosel fuder – the classic signature of Weiser-Künstler, which eschews intervention and gives the final word to the vineyard. With merely 10.0% alcohol, this Kabinett embodies the ideal of a light yet characterful Mosel Riesling.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Ideal with Mosel trout with almond butter, pike-perch with herb sauce, oysters or simple goat’s cheese with fresh herbs. Also excellent as an aperitif in its own right.
- Special Features
- A dry Kabinett – an increasingly rare and underestimated category in the Mosel – that proves lightness and depth are no contradiction. Definitely decant. And bring patience: this wine has time.
