The home of Marsanne lies in the stony north of the Rhône Valley, where it produces white wines of remarkable stature. It is a grape variety of mouthfeel, characterised by a dense texture and aromas reminiscent of ripe pears, acacia honey, quince and toasted almonds. With its moderate acidity and a fine, structuring bitter note, it builds a powerful presence on the palate, which develops a fascinating, nutty complexity with age.
In classic cuvées, it often seeks partnership with Roussanne or Viognier. In the northern Rhône Valley, Les Bruyères bottles this marriage with floral precision. That Marsanne can also take completely different paths is demonstrated by Familia Nin Ortiz in Catalonia, where they extract a completely new, profound facet from the variety alongside Chenin Blanc.
