Wine Description for Selma 2018 by Familia Nin Ortiz

Colour & Appearance
Sparkling, intense golden yellow in the glass – a wine that already promises maturity and concentration on a visual level.
Nose
Captivingly complex: ripe pear and grapefruit meet orange zest and banana skin, underpinned by white flowers, ginger and anise. With air contact, creamy vanilla notes and delicate butter hints develop – a sign of barrel ageing. Particularly remarkable: the iodine, smoky notes and dried meadow flowers, which convey a cool, maritime freshness.
Palate
Here the Selma reveals its true greatness: juicy fruit pairs with pronounced salinity and an invigorating acidity that brings the wine to life. The striking phenolics lend unusual depth and structure – this is no lean white wine, but a powerful, textured drop with impressive ageing potential. Still youthful and demanding: decanting is essential, large Burgundy glasses recommended.
Finish
Long, mineral and saline, finishing with persistent freshness.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard El Plà de Manlleu lies in Alt Penedès at a considerable 750 metres altitude. The soils of clay and limestone on just one hectare shape the mineral character of this extraordinary Catalan white wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A field blend of Roussanne, Marsanne, Chenin Blanc and Parellada Montonegra – a bold, unconventional assemblage. Slow pressing, fermentation and barrel ageing lend complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The pronounced structure demands appropriate partners: turbot with seaweed flakes and cuttlefish beurre blanc, pheasant with champagne sauerkraut and chestnuts or roasted porcini on artichoke base. Generally it harmonises excellently with saltwater fish and game fowl.
Special Features
A white wine with serious ageing potential – rare in Catalonia. The complexity increases further after a day in the refrigerator. An ambitious project by Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz that redefines high-altitude white wines from Penedès.
