Overview of the wine
This seductive wine has its origins in the El Plà de Manlleu vineyard in Alt Penedès, Ester Nin's home region. She and her partner Carles Ortiz have planted a mixture of Roussanne, Marsanne, Chenin blanc and Parellada Montonega vines on one hectare of land. These vines grow at an altitude of 750 metres on a soil of clay and limestone. After careful harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and both fermented and matured in barriques.
Color
A sparkle of deep golden yellow testifies to the careful maturation of this wine.
Scent
The 2018 Selma de Nin is a beguiling elixir. Its aroma of ripe pears, grapefruit and orange peel, paired with banana peel, white flowers, ginger and aniseed, is incredibly seductive. The oxygen this wine requires brings out soft, creamy vanilla notes and a hint of butter. These aromas indicate the previous ageing in oak barrels. Clear notes of dried meadow flowers, iodine and smoky notes complement the bouquet of rich flavours and cool freshness.
Taste
On the tongue, this first-class white wine unfolds its diversity and freshness. It combines juicy fruit with a perceptible saltiness and animating acidity. A strong phenolic gives it an impressive depth. This perfect white wine has a structure that harmonises wonderfully with seafood and wild fowl. Despite its youthful characteristics, it can be stored for several years without hesitation. For immediate consumption, I recommend decanting the wine and serving it in large glasses. Even a day of storage in the refrigerator can increase its potential.
Gastronomic recommendations
Roast portobello mushrooms and hazelnuts on an artichoke base with olive oil. Serve with pheasant prepared with savoy cabbage in champagne, chestnuts and Serrano ham. The second recommendation would be turbot garnished with seaweed flakes, beurre blanc of squid and green asparagus.
