Wine Description for Sgarzon Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2019 1500ml Magnum by Foradori
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, slightly transparent purple-red, which emphasises the youthfulness and freshness of this exceptional Teroldego. The clarity in the glass already promises the purity that characterises this wine.
- Nose
- The Sgarzon presents itself as the cooler and wilder sibling of the Morei – invigorating, elegant and seductively restrained. Elderberries and sloe berries dominate, accompanied by sour cherries and violet flowers. These are joined by light tobacco, fresh mint and dry undergrowth. A subtle aroma of sweet yeast testifies to the youth of this 2019.
- Palate
- The yeasty sweetness continues on the palate and merges with partly red, but above all dark, silky fruit. The texture recalls burnt clay – a typical characteristic of tinaja ageing. Everything appears clear, pure and refined. Vibrant acidity and prickling minerality give the wine its characteristic juiciness. In the finish, the fruit becomes darker but remains crisply fresh.
- Finish
- Medium length with dark fruit and bitter tobacco, which was already present on the nose. The freshness and minerality carry through to the end.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Sgarzon (dialect for „vine tendril“) lies in the Campo Rotaliano near Mezzolombardo on 2.5 hectares of alluvial flood plain. The sandy topsoil and the open, wind-exposed location result in ripening approximately one week later than in the more sheltered Morei vineyard. These cooler conditions shape the wine’s wilder, more elegant character.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Teroldego, eight months of skin contact maceration in Spanish 420-litre tinajas (cellar amphorae). In spring 2020, racked into concrete tanks for harmonisation over the summer. Moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Rice pilaf with beetroot and walnuts, fillet steak with chermoula sauce and roasted vegetables, lamb cutlets on vegetable couscous. The freshness and minerality also harmonise beautifully with robust vegetarian dishes.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises optimal ageing conditions. Elisabetta Foradori is regarded as a pioneer of biodynamic winemaking and amphora ageing in Italy – this Sgarzon is a brilliant example of her purist philosophy.
