Wine description for Sgarzon Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2017 by Foradori
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, slightly transparent garnet red with vibrant purple reflections – a wine that reveals its youth and freshness right in the glass.
- Nose
- The Sgarzon presents itself as the wilder, cooler sibling of the Morei. Earthy and stony, the nose opens with plenty of undergrowth and the juice of red berries. Dried herbs, sloes, barberries and a hint of juniper and elderberries lend the bouquet an almost alpine wildness. This is joined by a touch of austere tobacco and the sweet note of young yeast.
- Palate
- On the palate, a fascinating texture unfolds – silky and at the same time with that characteristic structure reminiscent of burnt clay, which the ageing in Spanish tinajas leaves behind. The fruit shifts between red and dark tones: crisp sour cherry, sloe and a hint of dark plum. A young, forceful acidity provides impressive vibrancy and juiciness. The prickling minerality and fine salinity on the finish make this wine positively quaffable.
- Finish
- The finish remains crisply fresh and becomes darker in fruit, accompanied by austere tobacco. The mineral salinity promotes an impressive, lingering drinkability.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the vineyard site Sgarzon (Trentino dialect for „vine tendril“) in Campo Rotaliano, Mezzolombardo. The 2.5-hectare parcel lies on alluvial silt with plenty of sand in the topsoil, approximately one kilometre from the winery. The open, wind-exposed location delays ripening by about a week compared to the more sheltered Morei vineyard site.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Teroldego, eight months maceration in tinajas (Spanish 420-litre cellar amphorae). In spring 2018, the wine was racked into concrete tanks for harmonisation over the summer. Moderate alcohol content of 12% vol.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Almond rice with figs and dates, seafood stew with fennel and tomatoes, lamb biryani with coriander and lime.
- Special Features
- An exemplary example of biodynamic viticulture and amphora ageing by Elisabetta Foradori. The Sgarzon embodies the cooler, wilder side of Teroldego with impressive clarity and purity.
