Wine description for Santenay 1er Cru rouge Grand Clos Rousseau AOC 2023 by Thomas Morey

Colour & Appearance
Deep garnet red with remarkably transparent character – a classic Pinot Noir that reveals its Burgundian origins already in the glass.
Nose
Cool and concentrated, this Premier Cru presents itself with red berries, undergrowth and a mineral stone note. A delicate violet floral bouquet hovers above. The wine still shows itself somewhat closed, yet the aromatic balance is already discernible – Thomas Morey’s signature with subtly integrated oak is unmistakable.
Palate
Clear, well-defined and firmly structured. The tannins currently feel quite present and slightly gripping, lending the wine a certain austerity – very much meant positively. This youthful reserve promises development potential. The Pinot shows itself linear and precise, without detours.
Finish
Quite long and persistent, with fine tannin structure that still needs time to fully integrate.
Terroir & Origin
Grand Clos Rousseau is part of the 23.83-hectare Clos Rousseau and lies on the southern side of Santenay towards Maranges. This vineyard site produces wines with firm character and mineral expression.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, largely destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in neutral barrel and tank. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously. Maturation with approximately 20% new oak – applied subtly and elegantly. Noteworthy: minimal sulphiting only in the last six months (maximum 35 mg/l total sulphur), which lends the wine vibrancy and authenticity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Duck breast roasted pink, venison loin with lingonberries, Coq au Vin or aged Comté cheese. The structured character calls for hearty, aromatic dishes.
Special Features
A classic Santenay Premier Cru that will reward patience. Currently still in the reserve of youth, it already displays the elegance and precision for which Thomas Morey is renowned. Drinking window from 2026, potential until at least 2035.
