Wine Description for Marsannay rouge AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
Marsannay is the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits – an appellation that long stood in the shadow of its great neighbours, yet today is increasingly recognised as a distinctive voice in the Burgundian chorus. Bruno Clair’s Marsannay rouge embodies precisely the style for which the domaine is known: precision without coldness, depth without heaviness. With an alcohol content of 13.0%, the wine remains lean and purposeful – a Pinot Noir that places elegance above opulence.
Terroir & Origin
Marsannay lies at the northern edge of the Côte d’Or, where soils are characterised by limestone and clay and the climate is somewhat cooler and windier than in Gevrey-Chambertin or Morey-Saint-Denis. The vintage 2023 is considered warm and early in Burgundy, yet it produced wines of remarkable freshness thanks to cool nights – a tension that suits Marsannay’s terroir well. The appellation has no Premier or Grand Crus, yet Bruno Clair has demonstrated over decades that wines of genuine substance can be produced here.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, as the Côte d’Or tradition demands. Bruno Clair works according to a philosophy based on minimal intervention and respect for the raw material. Ageing typically takes place in oak barrels, with the proportion of new wood deliberately restrained so as not to mask fruit and origin. The result is a wine that speaks the language of its terroir, not that of the cellarmaster.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to the Burgundian table. Classically, this wine harmonises beautifully with Bœuf bourguignon, Coq au vin or simple roasted chicken with herb butter. Equally recommended: duck breast with lentils, ripe Époisses or a robust Comté. The wine’s leanness also makes it an elegant accompaniment to mushroom dishes and delicate offal.
