Wine Description for Ried Sulz Morillon Erste STK Lage 2021 from Tement

Character
The winery Tement ranks among the defining addresses of South Styria – and the Ried Sulz belongs to those vineyard sites that justify this reputation year after year. The Morillon 2021 – as Chardonnay is traditionally called in Styria – embodies the unmistakable style of the house: precise, profound and imbued with a tension that characterises great white wines. With 14.0 % vol. alcohol, the wine sits on the riper side of the vintage, without losing its definition.
Terroir & Origin
The Ried Sulz lies in the heart of South Styria, a region whose gently rolling hills and the interplay of Pannonian warmth influences and Alpine fresh air currents create ideal conditions for the ripening of aromatic white wines. The classification as Erste STK Lage – the Styrian equivalent of a Premier Cru designation – underscores the extraordinary potential of this single vineyard site. The Opok soils, a characteristic interplay of limestone and marl typical of South Styria, lend the wine its mineral substance and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Morillon has developed a distinctive identity in Styria that sets it apart from Burgundian models: leaner, more nervous, more strongly shaped by the geology of the terroir. Tement employs careful, artisanal winemaking that places the origin front and centre and lets the wine speak – without overworking it through excessive oak influence. The 2021 vintage produced wines of remarkable structure and ageing potential in Styria, despite challenging weather conditions.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this calibre demands dishes with substance and finesse: pan-fried turbot with beurre blanc, calf’s sweetbreads with morels or a classic Wiener Backhendl would be worthy partners. Equally, aged Alpine cheese or creamy risotto variations with white truffle harmonise beautifully with the depth and complexity of this South Styrian Chardonnay.
