Tasting note
Character
A wine of quiet authority. Tement’s Sulz Morillon moves beyond overt fruit, seeking instead depth and that saline tension which distinguishes the great white wines of Southern Styria. It appears compact, almost austere in its youth, yet behind the initially reserved façade lies a Chardonnay of considerable substance.
Terroir & Origin
Southern Styria forms the spectacular backbone of this wine. In the steep slopes around Ehrenhausen, where the Tement estate has been rooted for generations, calcareous soils and cool, elevated sites define the landscape. The Ried Sulz, classified as an Erste STK Lage, is among those privileged terroirs where the region’s distinctive climate – warm days, cool nights – yields grapes of remarkable aromatic ripeness whilst retaining freshness. It is a vineyard that lends the Morillon an earthy seriousness, setting it apart from richer New Zealand or Californian interpretations.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay, here enshrined under its traditional Styrian name Morillon, finds its true vocation in the hands of the Tement family. Manfred Tement, who has led the estate since 1976, and now his sons Armin and Stefan, rely on restrained craftsmanship in the cellar, giving precedence to the terroir. The 2022 vintage shows the variety in its most structured form: yellow fruit of citrus and stone fruit, enveloped by a delicate spice and a texture that balances power with elegance. The maturation emphasises the grape’s natural structure without overlaying it with excessive wood.
Food Pairings
Its taut acidity and mineral depth make it an ideal companion for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled turbot with beurre blanc, with Styrian fried chicken with potato salad, or with matured goat’s cheese from the Styrian Volcano Land. It also finds its perfect match with risotto ai funghi featuring porcini, or simply with white asparagus with hollandaise sauce. A wine that enriches the table without overwhelming the dishes.
