Wine Description for Ried Kapellenweingarten Morillon DAC 2022 from Sattlerhof

Colour & Appearance
Pale, clear straw yellow with youthful brilliance – a wine that reveals its cool origins already in the glass.
Nose
Finely structured and of remarkable elegance: the nose opens with ripe notes of stewed yellow plum, orange and caramelised apple, complemented by the freshness of quince and crisp stone fruit. Beneath lie mineral stone hints, delicate apple skin and creamy nuances of almond biscuits – a bouquet that displays both depth and precision.
Palate
On the palate, the apple theme continues consistently: fresh apple flesh, lightly caramelised fruit and a gripping, invigorating apple skin texture form the backbone. The wine impresses with genuine substance and juicy fruit fullness, without ever feeling heavy. A vibrant, crisp acidity keeps everything in tension, whilst subtle nutty notes and a discreet salty touch lend it individuality and character.
Finish
Long, taut and mineral – the finish lingers with fresh acidity and a pleasantly saline aftertaste in the memory. A wine that rewards patience.
Terroir & Origin
The Kapellenweingarten is the highest-altitude vineyard site of Sattlerhof, at an impressive 600 metres elevation in South Styria. Slopes ranging from 20 to 70 % and soil composed of calcareous quartz and pebble scree shape a wine of crystalline minerality. The cool, airy microclimate ensures late ripening and a naturally vibrant acidity structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
From approximately 35-year-old Morillon vines (Chardonnay) – hand-selected, spontaneously fermented with merely 1.1 g/l residual sugar and 6.1 g/l acidity. Maturation took place over two years in large, neutral wooden casks: no artifice, no distraction – merely the expression of place and vintage.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with grilled turbot or scallops in butter sauce, equally suited to calf’s sweetbreads, pasta with white truffle or mature Comté. The saline minerality also makes it a congenial companion to oysters.
Special Characteristics
A distinctive, uncompromising Chardonnay from one of South Styria’s most exciting high-altitude vineyard sites. The two-year maturation in cask with deliberately restrained oak use underscores Sattlerhof’s philosophy: terroir before technique.
