Colour & appearance

Bright, luminous ruby red — translucent, youthful and inviting.

Nose

Cool and fresh, almost Atlantic in character, despite the wine being grown deep inland. Redcurrant, sour cherry and rosehip dominate, always restrained and crisp. Alongside these are blossoms of orange and lemon, plus the tart zest of freshly peeled mandarins. Fine spice in the background: clove, juniper and a hint of red pepper.

Palate

Darker, spicier fruit than the nose suggests, yet with the same feather-light step. Delicate lactic notes bind the elements together, while firm acidity repeatedly provides pleasing peaks. A fine astringency makes this enormously stimulating to drink — deep red, tart and tangy in the best possible sense.

Finish

Cool, juicy, with a lingering rosehip note and a moreish pull — in short: the glass empties faster than you might think.

Terroir & origin

The Dão lies in the mountainous north of Portugal, sheltered by surrounding mountain ranges. Niepoort — rooted in the Douro since 1842, transformed by Dirk Niepoort from a classic Port house into a pioneer of elegant still wines — works here with fellow winemakers. The 2021 vintage was marked by dry spells; the early harvest yielded balanced grapes with vibrant acidity — precisely what this style requires.

Grape varieties & vinification

A cuvée of indigenous varieties Jaen, Tinta Pinheira and Alfrocheiro, vinified dry with moderate alcohol (12.0% ABV). The approach is deliberately aimed at lightness and drinkability.

Food recommendations

Served lightly chilled, it is the ideal companion to tapas, grilled sardines (or any fish off the grill), pizza or a simple plate of chorizo and cheese. Also a delight on its own during balmy evenings.
