Jaen, celebrated just across the border in Galicia as Mencía, reveals a distinctly refined personality in Portugal’s granite-rich Dão valley. The variety shines with a floral aromatics of violets and woodland berries, paired with a juicy texture and fine acidity that lends the wines tremendous drinkability. It conveys the cool terroir of the Dão with unfiltered clarity, introducing a delicate, earthy spice into the mix.

How harmoniously the grape variety unfolds in traditional cuvées can be experienced at Niepoort. Together with Alfrocheiro and Tinta Pinheira, Jaen brings an invigorating freshness to the Nat Cool Tinto. That it is equally capable of deep, elegant complexity when paired with the structure-giving Baga in the Conciso Tinto makes it a versatile companion at the table, particularly alongside mushroom dishes or fine salami.
