Alfrocheiro
Also known as: Bruñal (Spain), Tinto Bastardinho
Alfrocheiro is one of Portugal’s underrated indigenous grape varieties – compact in berry size, concentrated in aroma, with a natural balance of fruit and structure that requires no technical tricks. In the Dão, it delivers dense yet not heavy red wines with dark fruit and a slightly spicy character. At Niepoort, it receives the attention it deserves – as a variety in its own right, not merely as a blending partner. Alfrocheiro ripens earlier than many other Portuguese varieties whilst retaining a freshness that distinguishes it from opulent Douro wines. A grape variety that demonstrates Portugal has more to offer than Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca.
