Alfrocheiro

The red grape variety Alfrocheiro, often called Alfrocheiro Preto in the Dão, is one of Portugal’s most distinctive voices. It possesses the rare gift of producing deeply coloured wines while simultaneously maintaining a vital, juicy acidity. Its aromatics are characterised by ripe wild berries, cherries and a fine, ethereal spice reminiscent of damp earth and fresh herbs. On the palate, it shines with supple tannins and a natural balance that pairs outstandingly with autumnal mushroom dishes or dark poultry.

Just how versatile the variety is in interplay with Jaen and Tinta Pinheira is demonstrated by the house of Niepoort. In the unfiltered Nat Cool, it transports a carefree, red-berried freshness straight into the glass. That the same traditional blend in the Dão is also capable of great depth is proven by the matured Quinta da Lomba Tinto Garrafeira with its noble, cool structure.
