Wine Description for Poggio al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2015 3000ml Double Magnum by Col d’Orcia

Character
The Poggio al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva embodies the essence of Tuscan winemaking art in its most demanding form. As a Riserva from the outstanding 2015 vintage, this wine unites power and finesse, structure and elegance. The imposing double magnum bottle with 3 litres of content guarantees not only a spectacular presentation, but also optimal ageing conditions for decades of cellaring potential. Col d’Orcia ranks among Montalcino’s most tradition-rich producers and manages vineyards in privileged sites south of the town.
Terroir & Origin
Montalcino rises majestically above the Tuscan landscape, where maritime influences from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea meet continental climate. The vineyards of Col d’Orcia benefit from calcareous soils and varying altitudes that provide ideal conditions for Sangiovese. The 2015 vintage is considered exceptional – a warm, dry year with perfect ripening that produced concentrated, long-lived wines. The Riserva designation requires a minimum of six years of ageing before release, of which two years are spent in wooden casks.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Brunello di Montalcino is produced exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso, a local clone of the Tuscan noble grape. This variety develops extraordinary complexity here with notes of dark cherries, leather, tobacco and Mediterranean herbs. Col d’Orcia relies on traditional ageing in large wooden casks, which preserves the fruit whilst shaping noble tannins. At 15% alcohol, the concentration of the vintage is evident, bound within the characteristic acidity structure of Sangiovese.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this stature demands equally substantial dishes: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised game dishes, Ossobuco or aged Pecorino Toscano. This Brunello also shows its full class with truffle dishes and robust mushroom ragouts. The double magnum is perfect for festive occasions with larger gatherings.
