Wine Description for Poggio al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2016 by Col d’Orcia
- Colour & Appearance
- Intense, luminous ruby red with the first garnet-hued reflections at the rim – a visual harbinger of the maturity and complexity this wine has already achieved.
- Nose
- A bouquet of impressive density and nobility. The Poggio al Vento 2016 presents itself classically and gracefully with fresh and dried cherries, cherry stones and plums in the foreground. These are joined by blood orange zest, roses and violets, which lend the wine a floral elegance. Deeper layers reveal liquorice, tobacco, forest floor with mushrooms, cedar and graphite – a multifaceted, timeless aromatic profile that invites lingering.
- Palate
- On the palate, this embodies a great Brunello Riserva: concentrated and powerful, yet supple and refreshingly juicy. Tart cherries, berries and orange peel dominate, underpinned by herbs, spices and mineral notes of stone. The structure is imposing, the texture sensuous, the acidity clear and refined. Balsamic and ethereal maturation notes blend harmoniously into the aromatic play – a wine that holds power and finesse in perfect balance.
- Finish
- Long, persistent and of noble complexity. The fruity and spicy notes linger sustainably, accompanied by fine mineral accents.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the south-facing vineyard Poggio al Vento („windy hill“) at around 300 metres elevation with views over the Orcia river. Planted since 1974 with a massale selection of the Brunello clone, the site benefits from optimal conditions and the cooling influence of its altitude.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sangiovese, hand-harvested and strictly selected. Fermentation at 25–28°C in small stainless steel tanks, 18–20 days maceration with daily pump-overs and délestage. Three years of maturation in Slavonian and Allier oak botti (25–75 hl), followed by a further three years in bottle – over six years in total from vineyard to release.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A wine for fine dining: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, Ossobuco, braised wild boar, aged Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano. Also an excellent choice with truffle dishes and mushroom risotto.
- Special Features
- A wine for decades. The Poggio al Vento has earned its reputation through a long succession of excellent vintages – the 2016 continues this tradition seamlessly and combines classical elegance with modern craftsmanship.
