Wine Description for Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 3000ml Double Magnum from Col d’Orcia
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous ruby red with elegant violet reflections – a visual promise of the youthfulness of this 2020 vintage.
- Nose
- A textbook Sangiovese of impressive complexity. The nose unfolds layers of black cherries, barberries and raspberries, underpinned with plums and blood oranges. These are joined by mint, cedar and cherry stones, followed by dried violet flowers, a hint of cinnamon and vanilla. Mineral notes of crushed stone and subtle hints of undergrowth and leaf litter round out this classic bouquet.
- Palate
- Here the true greatness of this Brunello reveals itself: dense, juicy and seductively ripe. The wine masterfully balances elegance with earthiness, carried by the characteristic Sangiovese structure with present yet perfectly integrated acidity and silky tannins. On the palate, sweet red and dark berries, cherries, baking spices and quatre épices dominate, accompanied by mineral notes and fine leafy nuances. Despite its power, the wine never feels heavy, but rather smooth and well-balanced.
- Finish
- Long, coating and of remarkable persistence. Liquorice and candied orange zest linger on, leaving a sustained, noble impression.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Sangiovese grapes come from the south-facing vineyards of Col d’Orcia in Montalcino, around 300 metres above sea level with views over the Orcia river. The 2020 vintage benefited from ideal conditions: a balanced vegetative cycle with cool day-night temperature differences in September, which enabled perfect phenolic ripeness and high aromatic concentration.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sangiovese, hand-harvested with strict selection. Fermentation for 15 days at controlled temperature below 28°C in specially designed wide steel tanks. Ageing over four years: 32 months in Slavonian and Allier oak barrels (25-75 hl), followed by at least 12 months in bottle. A classic, unadulterated maturation in the traditional style of the Cinzano family.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- This Brunello demands sophisticated cuisine: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù, Ossobuco, aged Pecorino Toscano or pappardelle with porcini mushrooms.
- Special Features
- The imposing double magnum (3 litres) promises extraordinary ageing potential. Col d’Orcia is among the benchmark producers of classic Brunello – a wine that embodies tradition and quality.
