Wine Description for Planetes Blanc 2022 by Familia Nin Ortiz
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous straw yellow with greenish reflections, brilliant clarity. A wine that already reveals its Mediterranean origin and the vintage’s freshness in the glass.
- Nose
- Surprisingly elegant and complex for a white Carignan. Intense aromas of white peach and apricot meet Mediterranean herbs – thyme and fennel. Beneath these, mineralic notes of slate and salt unmistakably express the Priorat terroir. With aeration, citrus blossom and a delicate almond note emerge.
- Palate
- Taut and precise, with lively acidity that perfectly balances the moderate alcohol content. Stone fruit and yellow fruits dominate, underpinned by a saline minerality that refreshes the palate. The texture is silky, almost creamy, without losing tension. Remarkable is the depth and concentration – here the old vine material from extreme steep slopes speaks volumes.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineralic with a hint of bitter almond and lemon zest. The freshness remains present right to the end – a wine that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- From Finca Planetes in Priorat, one of Spain’s most demanding wine regions. The parcel is scarcely inferior to the legendary Mas den Caçador vineyard site – steep slopes on Llicorella slate soils that can only be worked with mules. These extreme conditions fundamentally shape the wine’s character.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure white Carignan – a rarity. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz manage the vineyards entirely biodynamically. The star oenologist, who already achieved world renown at the legendary Clos Erasmus, understands how to create extraordinary wines from this rare grape variety.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with grilled fish, seafood and langoustines. Also excellent with lemon risotto, goat’s cheese or pan-fried scallops. The saline minerality harmonises wonderfully with sushi and ceviche.
- Special Features
- A rare white wine from the red Priorat, demonstrating that the region has more to offer than powerful red wines. Ester Nin received top ratings already with her debut vintage 2003 – this Planetes Blanc impressively continues that tradition.
