Wine Description for Kalk & Schiefer Cuvée Weiss 2023 by Nittnaus Anita & Hans

Colour & Appearance
Pale straw yellow with luminous green reflections – a wine that already promises freshness and vibrancy to the eye.
Nose
After a brief aeration, a fascinating aromatic profile unfolds, one that speaks less of abundant fruit than of terroir. Delicate notes of yellow stone fruit – small peaches – and kernel fruit hover above a mineral foundation. The chalky minerality gives the wine its characteristic tension, whilst the spicy slate note provides depth. A wine that does not deny its origins.
Palate
On the palate, the Kalk & Schiefer 2023 presents itself as a refreshing counterpoint to fruit-driven white wines. The herbal-spicy foundation continues, carried by a precise, chalk-based minerality that feels cool and lively. A slightly saline finish and good grip on the palate lend the wine structure and drinkability in equal measure. At a moderate 12.5% alcohol, it remains elegant and never heavy – a wine that invites you to take the next sip.
Finish
Medium-length and refreshing, with persistent mineral precision and spicy notes that linger long after.
Terroir & Origin
The hand-harvested grapes come from various vineyard sites around Jois on the northern Leithaberg in Burgenland. The soils of chalk and slate fundamentally shape the character of this wine and bestow upon it that minerality which makes it so distinctive.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A thoughtfully composed cuvée of 65% Pinot Blanc, 15% Grüner Veltliner, 15% Welschriesling and 5% Chardonnay. The blend combines the substance of Pinot Blanc with the spice of Veltliner into a harmonious whole.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion for fish dishes, steamed asparagus, goat’s cheese or light herb pasta. Also an excellent choice with seafood and summer salads. Its mineral character harmonises beautifully with oysters or sushi.
Special Characteristics
An authentic terroir wine that prioritises substance over spectacle – a joyful refresher for wine lovers who appreciate elegance and authenticity of origin.
