Tasting note
Character
A light, vibrant Grüner Veltliner from the Pannonian heart of Austria – refreshingly uncomplicated in the best sense, bearing the unmistakable signature of a winery that consistently places closeness to nature above convention. With just 11.0% vol. alcohol, this wine is a manifesto for drinkability and everyday pleasure, without sacrificing personality in the process.
Terroir & Origin
The Burgenland, more precisely the Neusiedlersee, shapes this wine with its unique Pannonian climate: hot, dry summers, mild autumns and the thermal equilibrium provided by the shallow steppe lake. Meinklang manages its vineyard sites according to biodynamic principles – the winery ranks among Austria’s most convincing exponents of this philosophy. The soils surrounding the Neusiedlersee, characterised by gravel, loam and sand, impart a distinctive mineral lightness to the wines, clearly distinguishing the Grüner Veltliner from this region from that of the Wachau.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s national grape variety par excellence – versatile, expressive and inseparable from the country’s wine culture. Meinklang vinifies in the spirit of biodynamic viticulture, where vineyard and cellar are conceived as a unified whole. The modest alcohol content points to a deliberately early harvest or naturally moderate ripeness – the result is a wine that prioritises freshness and lightness over richness, placing the varietal character unfiltered centre stage.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This fresh, dry Veltliner is an ideal companion to asparagus with hollandaise sauce, Wiener Schnitzel or grilled pike-perch. It also harmonises beautifully with Asian noodle dishes, vegetable quiches or a simple Brettljausn – the Austrian charcuterie board. Its lightness moreover makes it the perfect aperitif on warm evenings.
