Wine Description for Mason di Mason DOC 2018 by Manincor
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense ruby red with a bright, slightly russet rim – a Pinot Noir that displays its maturity without losing its youthful vigour.
- Nose
- Here unfolds the full complexity of the Mazzon terroir: damp forest floor, wet limestone and moss dominate this earthy, almost Burgundian nose initially. Pine needles, tree bark and a hint of cigar box lend the wine its alpine signature. The fruit – wild cherries, lingonberries, elderberry – deliberately takes a back seat. Instead, red pepper, juniper, cinnamon and fresh herbal spice from lovage and sage define the profile. A subtle smoky note lingers in the background – dark, tense, demanding.
- Palate
- The contrast to the nose could hardly be greater: the attack recalls biting into a handful of sour cherries – juicy, intense, with an acidity sharp as a razor blade. Here reign finesse, elegance and breeding. The crisp acidity structure cuts precisely across the red fruit, animating, demanding generous sips. High astringency and a vibrant mouthfeel make this Blauburgunder a wine of great tension and drinking flow in equal measure.
- Finish
- Long, juicy and with persistent freshness. The earthy notes return, accompanied by fine tannin structure and mineral precision.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Mazzon vineyard site in South Tyrol is legendary for Pinot Noir. At 400-450 metres altitude, with southern exposure and cool, well-ventilated winds, wines of great elegance are born here. Four hectares on a plateau with limestone soils define the character of this extraordinary wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir), harvested and vinified by parcel. Maceration in wooden vats with natural yeasts, three-week maceration with twice-daily pigeage. Twelve months ageing in barriques (approximately 50% new), followed by blending only of the finest barrels – a selection of selections.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Roasted venison loin with lingonberry jus, lamb’s tongue with lukewarm lentil-caper vinaigrette or surprisingly also grilled sea bream with spiced fennel – the acidity and structure carry even robust fish dishes.
- Special Features
- A South Tyrolean Pinot Noir that combines Burgundian earthiness with alpine precision. Only the finest barrels from the finest parcels find their way into this wine – an uncompromising statement.
