Wine Description for Xérico 2020 by Tentenublo
- Character
- The Xérico from Tentenublo is an unconventional Cuvée of Viura and Tempranillo, breaking with classical Rioja conventions. Roberto Oliván, the driving force behind Tentenublo, belongs to that new generation of winemakers who rediscover old vineyards and work with minimalist interventions. The name „Xérico“ (xerophytic = dry) alludes to the barren, stony soils and continental climate that characterise these wines – concentrated, vibrant and with a palpable mineral tension.
- Terroir & Origin
- Tentenublo manages old parcels in Rioja Alta, often at higher elevations around Viñaspre. The soils are characterised by limestone and clay, the vineyards often planted with mixed-age old vines. The continental climate with cool nights ensures freshness and acidity, whilst the higher elevation favours elegance and finesse. 2020 was a warm, dry vintage in Rioja that produced concentrated wines with good structure.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- The combination of Viura (also called Macabeo) and Tempranillo is unusual, yet historically rooted in Rioja. Viura brings freshness, citrus notes and structure, whilst Tempranillo contributes red fruit, body and texture. Tentenublo works according to biodynamic principles, with spontaneous fermentation, minimal sulphiting and often extended skin contact. The wines age in used barrels or concrete to avoid masking the fruit and terroir expression. The result is vibrant, approachable wines with depth.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The Xérico is versatile at table: perfect with grilled fish, seafood or Pulpo a la Gallega. Its structure harmonises equally well with chorizo, pinchos, roasted chicken or hard cheeses such as Manchego. Served lightly chilled, it is an ideal companion to Mediterranean cuisine and demonstrates how modern Rioja can be.
