Wine information
This white wine from the Basque region of Rioja comes from old Viura vines that grow on the calcareous soils and ferruginous clay soils that are common in the region. The grapes from biodynamic cultivation are pressed directly and fermented spontaneously. The wine matures for six months in 225 and 500 litre oak barrels, a third of which are new. The result is a multi-layered wine that is characteristic of the Viura grape variety and the Rioja wine-growing region.

Nose
The nose reveals the typical Viura aroma of white flowers, yellow apple and pear. However, the primary fruit is rarely overpowering in Viura, as is the case with this white wine. The fine fruit is joined by secondary flavours such as biscuit, coconut and a little marzipan. Everything is very balanced, fresh and of good intensity. Notes of dried herbs and grasses add to the complexity and ensure an overall attractive and stimulating bouquet.
Palate
On the palate, the Txabola Viura 2021 is full-bodied with a creamy texture. It is fresh and lively and develops a great grip in the mouth. The flavour is dominated by ripe apples and a subtly sweetish spiciness. A slight bitterness reminiscent of almond shells also emerges in the rather long finish. Both the wood and the 14 per cent alcohol are excellently integrated. Overall, this is a complex and drinkable white wine that could hardly be more typical of younger Rioja. It is already performing now, but certainly also has very good ageing potential. It also demands to be paired with food.
