Wine description for Txabola Viura 2021 by Maisulan

Colour & Appearance
Luminous pale yellow in the glass, clear and brilliant – a promising first impression.
Nose
Restrained elegance, as is typical for Viura. White flowers, yellow apple and pear form the aromatic foundation, yet the true complexity unfolds through barrel ageing: biscuit, coconut and a hint of marzipan meld with notes of dried herbs and grasses into a balanced, fresh bouquet of considerable intensity. Nothing feels intrusive – everything harmonises beautifully.
Palate
Here the Txabola shows its full class: full-bodied and creamy in texture, yet refreshingly lively with excellent grip. Ripe apples dominate, accompanied by a subtle sweet spice. The 14 per cent alcohol? Perfectly integrated. The oak? Present, but never dominant – exactly as it should be.
Finish
Remarkably long with a fine bitterness reminiscent of almond skins that lends the wine structure and tension. A finale that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
From Basque Rioja, where old Viura vines are rooted in chalky soils and iron-rich clay. This geological diversity is reflected in the wine’s complexity – an authentic expression of its provenance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Biodynamic viticulture, direct pressing and spontaneous fermentation – Maisulan works with uncompromising natural methods. Six months of maturation in 225- and 500-litre oak barrels (one third new) lend the wine depth without heaviness. A prime example of modern, ambitious Rioja white wine production.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine practically demands accompaniment: grilled monkfish or grilled vegetables are ideal partners. Also an excellent choice with poultry in cream sauce, pasta with mushrooms or mature sheep’s cheese.
Special Features
A white wine that represents the younger generation of Rioja producers: complex, approachable and with excellent ageing potential. Performs at a high level already, but will gain further depth in the coming years.
