Since 2002, Daniela and Steffen Mugler have run their estate in Maikammer in the Palatinate, a family business they have carefully modernised. He is responsible for the vineyards and the cellar, she for the office, customer contact and shipping. The vines are grown biodynamically on calcareous marl and coloured sandstone, without any chemical-synthetic treatments. Intervention in the cellar is minimal: spontaneous fermentation, long ageing on the lees, sparing use of sulphur. This is how Pinot varieties, Chardonnay and Riesling of clear, mineral elegance come into being – living wines, precise and without heaviness.

More about M. Schädler - Steffen Mugler
A family estate since 2002
Daniela and Steffen Mugler have been running their winery in Maikammer since 2002. At the time, they took over the estate from Manfred Schädler, which is why the price list still reads “M. Schädler – Steffen Mugler” to this day. Since then, the two of them have carefully modernised the family business while preserving its structures. Their guiding principle: to retain what has proven its worth and to explore new paths in harmony with nature. The most consequential step was the complete conversion to biodynamic viticulture; the estate is organically certified. Steffen Mugler is responsible for the vineyard and cellar, while Daniela Mugler handles the office, customer contact and shipping.
Steffen Mugler came to winemaking via a detour: he originally wanted to become a car mechanic, but a friend introduced him to the vine because he was drawn to working independently outdoors. After completing his training, he gained experience in New Zealand; back in the Palatinate, he spent more than ten years in charge of the vineyard and ageing at a VDP estate.

Biodynamic vineyard, tranquil cellar
Around Maikammer, the vines grow on calcareous marl and coloured sandstone. The vineyard is cultivated biodynamically, with its own composting and cover crops, entirely without synthetic chemicals. Observation of the soil and the vines determines the work, while the seasons set the rhythm. In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum: many wines ferment spontaneously, fining agents are not used, sulphur is dosed sparingly and the lees ageing is long. The focus is on the Pinot varieties Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder, as well as Chardonnay and Riesling, complemented by cuvées and PIWI varieties.
The Weissburgunder Reserve 2025 shows what this signature means: a Weißburgunder with richness and depth that retains the clarity of fruit typical of the Palatinate.
The Simply White 2025 represents the accessible side of the range: spontaneous fermentation and the decision not to fine ensure vibrancy and drinkability. The Riesling Maikammer Kirchenstück 2024 comes from a historic top vineyard site in the village; weathered coloured sandstone lends it fine minerality, while spontaneous fermentation provides complex yeast notes and depth. A Riesling with substance and ageing potential.

Cuvées and sparkling wine
The Mugler Cuvée "R" 2023 blends equal parts of the fungus-resistant variety Satin Noir with St. Laurent. It is fermented on the skins in an open vat, punched down by hand, after which the wine matures in wooden casks until bottling.
In addition, Steffen Mugler founded the sparkling wine estate Andres & Mugler together with Michael Andres. For their own winery, the Muglers state their goal simply: elegant, clear, mineral, living wines.
