Wine Description for Chianti Classico DOCG 2021 by Le Masse
Colour & Appearance
In the glass, this Chianti Classico presents itself in a luminous, dark cherry red with violet reflections – a visual hint of its youth and vitality. The bright rim suggests the elegant structure of Sangiovese.
Nose
The nose is a masterclass in Tuscan typicity: uncomplicated yet possessed of striking elegance. Sour cherry and redcurrant form the fruity foundation, whilst behind them unfolds a fascinating spice spectrum. Cinnamon, clove, cardamom and juniper meld into a harmonious whole. With a little air contact, notes of warm cinnamon plums develop, followed by dried Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary and oregano. This balsamic-ethereal complexity is impressive for a base wine.
Palate
On the palate, the true class of this wine reveals itself: silky, balanced and carried by a precise acidity structure that never feels intrusive, but rather leads with elegance. The tannin – fine-grained and perfectly integrated – forms the structural backbone without ever dominating. The spice, both ethereal and balsamic, unfolds particularly in the long, lingering finish. A Chianti that effortlessly unites power and finesse.
General Information
Le Masse practises artisanal winemaking at the highest level here: 100% Sangiovese, hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control and with an impressive maceration time of 35-45 days. The one-year maturation in small French oak barrels (2.25 and 5 hl) lends the wine additional complexity without masking the fruit. Work on the lees with regular bâtonnage in the first months contributes to the creamy texture.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This versatile Chianti harmonises perfectly with Pasta al Ragù, Bistecca alla Fiorentina, Ossobuco or aged Pecorino. Also an excellent choice with game dishes, mushroom risotto or herb-crusted lamb rack.
Special Features
An authentic, honest Chianti Classico that combines modern vinification techniques with traditional craftsmanship. The minimalist intervention approach and the long maceration time result in a wine of remarkable depth and drinkability – far beyond what one might expect from a base Chianti.
