  • The Chianti Classico DOCG 2022 from Le Masse is a biodynamically produced Sangiovese from Barberino Val d’Elsa, sourced from old vines planted in 1974 and 1986, with 70% aged in concrete and the remainder in large wooden casks – a wine that Robin Mugnaini himself describes as the one that brings him the greatest joy.
  • 🎨 Colour: Deep ruby red with garnet reflections, dense and vibrant in the glass.
  • 👃 Nose: Intense aromas of ripe cherries, red berries and violets, underpinned by fine herbal notes, a hint of leather and subtle spice.
  • 👅 Palate: Juicy and structured with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a long, elegant finish that carries the fruit and minerality of the terroir.
  • 🎭 Character: An authentic Chianti Classico with soul – powerful yet not heavy, traditional in style but with modern clarity and depth, distinctly artisanal in character.
  • 🍽️ Food pairing: Ideal with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù with pappardelle or aged Pecorino Toscano.
  • ✨ Special features: Biodynamic farming since 2015, organic certification since 2020, spontaneous fermentation without temperature control, ageing in concrete and large wooden casks – a wine that embodies the philosophy of an artisan estate with old vines and uncompromising craftsmanship.

Wine description for Chianti Classico DOCG 2022 by Le Masse

Character
A Sangiovese of rare honesty: juicy, vibrant, and unadorned. Robin Mugnaini, once an actor alongside Tom Hanks, crafts wines here that tell stories – and this 2022 vintage, which he himself describes as the wine that brings him the greatest joy, reveals the full tension between Tuscan tradition and artisanal instinct. Cherry, violet, a delicate herbal note, complemented by the lively acidity that distinguishes Sangiovese when in good hands.
Terroir & Origin
Fattoria Le Masse is located in Barberino Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Twenty hectares of vines, including Sangiovese vines planted in 1974 and 1986, share the estate with some 6,000 olive trees. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2015 and has been certified organic since 2020 – pragmatic rather than dogmatic, as Mugnaini emphasises. Art is part of the DNA here: his mother, a Berlin-based painter, designs the labels; the amphorae are crafted by sculptor Lorenzo Vignoli.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Sangiovese, fermented without temperature control, without pumping, and without compromise. The 2022 vintage was aged 70 per cent in concrete, with the remainder in large 2,000-litre wooden casks – a maturation that allows fruit and structure to breathe rather than masking them. The result is a Chianti Classico that makes no secret of its origins.
Food Pairings
The vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannin structure make this wine a natural partner for Tuscan cuisine: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, Pappardelle al cinghiale, or a simple board of Pecorino with finocchiona. It is also a delightful choice with wood-fired pizza or Pollo al mattone.
