  • The Bakkanali Rosso IGT 2024 from the Bakkanali estate is a dry Sangiovese from Tuscany, grown on the extinct volcano Monte Amiata at an altitude of 600 to 850 metres – cool nights and volcanic soils of limestone, schist and quartz shape its vibrant freshness and fine minerality.
  • 🎨 Colour: Sparkling, medium-intense ruby red with youthful violet reflections.
  • 👃 Aroma: Fresh red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, accompanied by violet, a hint of herbs and a fine, almost blood-like mineral spiciness.
  • 👅 Taste: Energetic and slender with lively acidity, juicy red fruit and finely structured tannins – no jamminess, but rather cool precision and a taut, mineral finish.
  • 🎭 Character: A Sangiovese showing its cool, straightforward side: volcanically influenced, invigorating and with a clear drinking flow rather than opulence.
  • 🍽️ Food recommendation: Pasta with game ragù, grilled lamb or Tuscan Pecorino.
  • ✨ Special features: Pure Sangiovese from organically certified vineyards on the Monte Amiata volcano; aged in stainless steel and concrete without new barriques, bottled unfined and only minimally sulphured – the purist style of the new Tuscan generation.

Wine description for Bakkanali Rosso IGT 2024 by Bakkanali

Character
A Sangiovese showing its energetic side: slender, cool in outline, with vibrant acidity and an almost blood-like minerality. No jamminess, no opulence – instead, clear red fruit, fine-grained tannins and a pull that evokes mountain air rather than Tuscan heat. At 13.0% vol., this is a red wine of refreshing drinkability that places elegance above volume.
Terroir & Origin
The estate lies at an altitude of 600 to 850 metres on Monte Amiata, a volcano in southern Tuscany that has been dormant for 180,000 years, just half an hour from Montalcino. The soils – limestone, marl, schist, volcanic silicates and quartz – read like a geological textbook. Temperature differences of up to 20 degrees between day and night preserve the grapes’ acidity and aromatics. Sebastian Nasello, formerly cellar master at Podere Le Ripi in Montalcino, and Ugo Fabbri cultivate 5.5 hectares of organically certified vines here – on their way towards biodynamic farming.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Sangiovese, fermented in stainless steel and concrete, deliberately without new barriques. Cool maceration and partial whole-bunch fermentation emphasise freshness and structure; yields are limited to a maximum of 40 hectolitres per hectare. It is bottled unfined and only minimally sulphured – craftsmanship that frees the wine from everything superfluous.
Food Pairings
A versatile everyday wine: with pasta with mushrooms, beef tagliata, Pecorino or grilled vegetables. Served slightly chilled, it is also a delight alongside charcuterie during a simple evening among friends – entirely in the spirit of the Bacchanalia, those Roman festivities in honour of the god of wine from which the estate takes its name.
