Wine Description for Vigna Banditella Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2022 by Col d’Orcia

Character
The Vigna Banditella represents the accessible side of Montalcino – a Rosso that captures the essence of Sangiovese without sacrificing complexity. Col d’Orcia, one of the region’s most traditional estates, understands how to produce authentic terroir wines even within the „smaller“ DOC category. The 2022 vintage displays youthful freshness and that characteristic tension which distinguishes great Sangiovese.
Terroir & Origin
Col d’Orcia manages around 140 hectares in the south-eastern part of Montalcino, where calcareous soils and proximity to Monte Amiata provide cooling influences. The Vigna Banditella benefits from this privileged location: the Galestro and Alberese soils lend the Sangiovese that mineral precision for which Montalcino is renowned. The 2022 vintage brought balanced conditions to Tuscany with warm days and cool nights – ideal for aromatic ripeness whilst retaining acidity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Rosso di Montalcino is the younger sibling of Brunello – made from the same Sangiovese clones, but with a shorter maturation period. Col d’Orcia relies on traditional vinification with controlled maceration and ageing in large oak casks and barriques. The result: a wine that displays the typical Sangiovese characteristics – red cherry, herbal spice, earthy notes – without overwhelming the fruit. At 14.5% alcohol, the wine shows power without heaviness, a balancing act that reveals craftsmanship.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Rosso calls for Tuscan cuisine: Pappardelle al Cinghiale, Bistecca alla Fiorentina or aged Pecorino are classic partners. The wine also reveals its strengths with mushroom dishes, game ragù or a simple Pasta al Pomodoro with good olive oil. The lively acidity makes it a versatile food companion that doesn’t demand attention, but rather complements the meal.
