Wine Description for Laurenc 2020 from Pranzegg
- Colour & Appearance
- Opaque purple-red with violet reflections and a black core – a Lagrein that reveals its concentration and youthfulness at first glance.
- Nose
- A generous and expansive bouquet unfolds with rich, dark fruit and spicy notes. Blackberries and dark mulberries dominate, accompanied by fully ripe damsons and stewed stone fruit. Spicy counterpoints are set by allspice, juniper and light tobacco, whilst sloe and hollyhock provide bitter elegance. A fruity-spicy base of impressive depth.
- Palate
- Here the Laurenc reveals itself as a disciplined, fine-grained structured Lagrein – far removed from the often leafy astringency typical of this variety. The tannin presents itself as fine-knit yet polished, with youthful vigour and aromatic bitterness. The juicy fruit feels more sinewy than on the nose and envelops a sparkling ripe acidity that guarantees freshness and tension.
- Finish
- Long, fruity-bitter and carried by the lively acidity – a finale that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the estate vineyard at 300 metres altitude in a north-westerly aspect above the Bolzano valley basin. The soils of loamy sand of volcanic origin with moraine deposits of porphyry, basalt and granite are deep and well-draining – ideal conditions for characterful vineyard site wines.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Lagrein from biodynamically managed vineyards, hand-harvested at 7,000 vines per hectare. Spontaneous fermentation in wooden vats with all stems and four weeks of skin contact. Subsequently 24 months maturation in large wooden vessels and a further 24 months bottle age. Unfiltered, unfined – pure craftsmanship with only minimal sulphur additions.
- Food Recommendations
- Perfect companion to braised venison or venison ragout, beef roast with root vegetables, aged hard cheeses such as Bergkäse or mushroom dishes with polenta. The moderate alcohol content also makes it an ideal choice with pasta with wild boar sauce.
- Special Features
- A Lagrein that proves this variety can do more than rustic tannin bombs. Martin Gojer’s patient work – four years from vine to market readiness – pays off in finesse and precision. A wine that authentically embodies the biodynamic philosophy of Pranzegg winery.
