Wine Description for Riesling Ölberg GG 2023 from Kühling-Gillot

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow with a clear, luminous shine – a wine that already signals precision and elegance in the glass.
Nose
Delicate and bright, with a floral foundation that gradually unfolds. A subtly smoky note settles over succulent yellow fruit – ripe mirabelle plum, peach, a hint of citrus zest. With air and a touch of warmth, a stony, cool mineral character emerges, unmistakably revealing its origin from the Roter Hang.
Palate
On the palate, this Riesling unfolds with remarkable juiciness and vibrancy. The texture is silky and rounded, the fruit charming and inviting, supported by solid extract. The wine initially seduces with smoothness and balance – yet it holds a surprise in store.
Finish
In the finale, the Ölberg gains tension and character: the wine becomes saline, piquant and taut, displaying genuine drive and a mouth-watering minerality that lingers long. A finish that promises greatness.
Terroir & Origin
The Nierstein Ölberg is the southernmost vineyard site of the renowned Roter Hang in Rheinhessen – with complete southern exposure and a gradient of up to 60 per cent, it is a classic steep slope par excellence. The red slate takes on the role of the humus layer here, stores warmth and gives the wine its unmistakable mineral fingerprint.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Riesling, vinified as a Großes Gewächs – dry with 12.5% alcohol. A wine that reflects the philosophy of Kühling-Gillot: precision in the cellar, respect for the place.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Ideal with grilled pike-perch with herb butter, scallops on pea purée or a classic Wiener Schnitzel. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese and white asparagus with hollandaise sauce.
Special Features
A Riesling that doesn’t reveal itself immediately – it needs time in the glass and rewards patience with growing complexity. The 2023 vintage displays remarkable freshness in this vineyard site despite the warmth, a testament to the Ölberg’s exceptional suitability even in challenging years.
