Wine Description for Gutedel Kalk und Löss 2022 from Weingut am Klotz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous golden yellow with delicate green reflections – a visual promise of freshness and vibrancy in the glass.
Nose
This Gutedel presents itself with restrained elegance and fine aromatic complexity. Pear and quince form the foundation, playfully interwoven with citrus notes and a whisper of anise. Beneath lie subtle hints of yeast spice, almonds and mineral oyster shells – a cool, purist aromatics that awakens curiosity.
Palate
Refreshing and gripping, the wine reveals itself on the palate, remarkably substantial for its modest 11% alcohol. The minerality is present, yet never intrusive, accompanied by fine spice and an invigorating acidity structure. Here the terroir speaks clearly – limestone and loess lend the Gutedel tension and drinkability in equal measure.
Finish
Medium-length and juicy, with a mineral echo reminiscent of damp stones. The freshness persists to the very end and practically demands another sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Isteiner Klotz – a distinctive ridge between the southern Black Forest and the Rhine Graben – decisively shapes this wine. The Jurassic limestone deposits combined with loess loam create ideal conditions for Gutedel with character and minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spontaneous fermentation 80% in stainless steel, 20% in large used wooden barrel – an élevage that respects the grape variety and underscores its elegance without overworking it.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion: Perfect with asparagus with melted butter and new potatoes, smoked trout on lentil and leek salad or brawn with fried potatoes. The moderate alcohol content makes it an ideal lunchtime wine.
Special Characteristics
At just 11% alcohol, a textbook example of elegant, drink-inviting Gutedel – a wine that proves lightness and complexity are not opposites. Ideal for those who appreciate finesse over power.
