Chasselas

Also known as: Chasselas (Switzerland, Savoy), Fendant (Valais)
A grape variety that’s easily underestimated – until you drink a good Gutedel. In Baden, at the southernmost tip of Germany, the grape shows its subtle strength: clear, mineral, with a fruit that never becomes intrusive. The grape absorbs terroir like few others, which is why the limestone and loess soils of the Upper Rhine provide such important character. Winery at the Klotz from Efringen-Kirchen proves that Gutedel is more than just an uncomplicated terrace wine.
In Switzerland, the grape is called Chasselas and has cult status in Valais as Fendant. In Alsace, Domaine Albert Mann vinifies the variety as a single varietal in amphorae – a rarity that shows how much substance lies within this quiet grape. Gutedel doesn’t demand attention, but those who embrace its restraint will find an elegant food companion.
