Wine description for Sauvignon Blanc Kalk und Löss 2025 by Weingut am Klotz

Character
A dry, tightly structured Sauvignon Blanc that places its origins firmly in the foreground. Rather than exaggerating exotic fruit, it reveals the cool, linear side of the variety: citrus notes, green herbs, a hint of gooseberry, carried by a perceptible limestone-driven minerality. At 12.5% vol., it remains light on its feet and inviting – a wine of precision, not opulence.
Terroir & Origin
Weingut am Klotz is situated on the Isteiner Klotz in the Markgräflerland, the southernmost tip of Baden. The name of the wine points to its foundation: limestone and loess, with the Jurassic limestone of the Klotz representing a geological rarity in Germany – a rock otherwise found in the Jura and Burgundy. Since 2018/2019, the families behind the estates Reinecker and Franz Keller have been cultivating this rediscovered gem, converting it consistently to organic farming. The exposed position on the striking rock lends the wines freshness and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Sauvignon Blanc is regarded as an aromatic grape variety that reacts particularly sensitively to its environment – on calcareous soils it often shows its tautest, saltiest side. The estate follows a purist approach: careful hand harvesting, gentle selection and, in the cellar, the principle of minimal intervention. This preserves the natural expression of the grape and the terroir, unadorned and clearly defined.
Food Pairings
Its freshness and acidity structure make it a versatile food wine: with goat’s cheese, the classic par excellence, with asparagus and green vegetables, with river fish such as trout or whitefish, with sushi and light Asian dishes featuring herbs and lime. Enjoyed on its own, well chilled on a warm evening, it is also a delight.
